Universities of Zurich receive double-digit millions of funding

The European Research Council (ERC) has approved 542 Million Euros for totally 275 Research project for the next five years. The money is split into areas such as physics and engineering (41.5%), life sciences (30.5%), social sciences and humanities (17.5%) and interdisciplinary research (10.5%). Also seven professorships at the ETH Zurich and 2 at the University of Zurich are funded by an ERC grant. external pageNovember - Text in german 2008

Force governs function of proteins

Today nanotechnology enables us to attract individual molecules mechanically, allowing their behaviour when exposed to a mechanical force to be observed. With the aid of computer simulations, ETH Zurich researchers can now illustrate how a particular scaffolding protein in the bonding between the extra-cellular matrix and the internal cytoskeleton can be activated by exerting force upon it. external pageMarch 2008

Regulation of protein function by tension

These days, single molecules can be stretched by the means of nanotechnology. This allows investigating the behavior of molecules under the application of mechanical forces. Researcher at the ETH Zurich show how a certain structural protein linking the extracellular matrix and the intracellular cytoskeleton can be activated by force. February - Text in german 2008
